Expanding Access: ExamFX Launches Spanish-Language Study Guides

October 04, 2024

The state of insurance for Spanish-speaking consumers

A growing number of states have added Spanish-language insurance licensing exams in the major lines of authority (Life, Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines) to better serve the growing number of Spanish-speaking consumers in the United States. The Census Bureau estimates there were 65.2 million Hispanics in the U.S. as of July 2023, a new high. They made up more than 19% of the nation’s population.  As of 2024, 22 states offer licensing exams in Spanish.

The need for Spanish-language resources

While a significant portion of the Hispanic community is bilingual, a considerable number primarily speak Spanish. This presents a barrier to accessing insurance products and services.

Statistics show that Hispanic Americans are underinsured compared to other racial and ethnic groups, highlighting the need for greater accessibility.

  • Life Insurance: Only 43% of Hispanic respondents reported having life insurance coverage, the lowest rate among any racial or ethnic group over the past decade. (LIMRA, Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association)
  • Financial Security: Hispanic respondents expressed a higher need for life insurance protection, with concerns about saving for emergencies and supporting themselves if unable to work.

Barriers to insurance access for Hispanics

A lack of awareness due to insufficient availability of Spanish-language information may play a large role in keeping Spanish-dominant individuals from getting life insurance. LIMRA cites the following barriers and misconceptions:

  • Perceived Cost: A higher perceived cost of life insurance. 7 in 10 Hispanic respondents (72%) overestimate the cost of a term life insurance policy.
  • Financial Priorities: Concerns about competing financial priorities and having enough money for a comfortable retirement. More than 4 in 10 (44%) of Hispanic respondents are worried about being able to save money for an emergency fund and being able to support themselves if they are unable to work.
  • Qualification for Coverage: 12% of Hispanics who do not own (or do not own enough) life insurance believe they would not qualify for coverage.

It is essential that the Hispanic population has access to insurance. Conning Research predicts there will be more than 30 million new Hispanic drivers hitting the roads through 2050, and the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals predicts they will be the largest group of homebuyers in the country by 2030.

While much of the Hispanic community in the United States are on the bilingual spectrum, it is important to make Spanish available to this audience. According to the SXM Media Bilingual Study, 29% of surveyed Hispanic people speak Spanish only, 54% are on the bilingual spectrum, and 17% speak only English.

Now is the time for the industry to build trust with this community to help them make informed financial decisions, encourage confidence in their coverage, and ensure their loved ones are protected.
